“Raising Awareness of Down Syndrome throughout N.E. Mississippi”
Welcome and thank you for visiting NEMDSS.org. The families of the Northeast Mississippi Down Syndrome Society invite you to spend some time browsing through our website to learn more about Down syndrome, our non-profit organization, and the programs and many activities that we offer.
The organizers of the Northeast Mississippi Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk™ have announced their plans for the 4th Annual Buddy Walk™ fundraiser. The 2010 event will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Saltillo City Park beginning with registration at 9 a.m. and going throughout the day. Many of the fun activities from past Buddy Walks™ will return for this year’s festival as well as a few new ones, including a 5K Buddy Run, which will begin earlier in the morning that day.
Scott Knight, co-founder and executive director of NEMDSS says that having the 5K run is an answer to local calls requesting the added event from 5K enthusiasts. “We have numerous local residents who have taken up running as a hobby and felt like they could do more to help our organization by supporting the 5K Buddy Run and encouraging their friends to participate as well,” said Knight....
NEMDSS Star of the Month
Elizabeth Grace Blackford Elizabeth Grace Blackford was born Aug. 10, 2006 with the Trisomy 21 form of Down syndrome. She has had two open heart surgeries; with the first one occurring when she was only 6 months old. She was still just a year old when she had the second open heart surgery.
Elizabeth has a joyful, enthusiastic and outgoing personality. She is loved by her parents, John and Carolyn as well as her 7 older siblings, and 1 younger sibling whom she adores.
It is wonderful to see her take care and show her little sister how to play with baby dolls. She also likes to ride ponies, roller skate, swim, sing, play football with her brothers, and play soccer. She also loves to "play" piano and help cook.
Since becoming a part of the Northeast Mississippi Down Syndrome Society, Elizabeth and her family participated in the annual "Down Syndrome at the Zoo Day" this past April where they joined some 70 other members of NEMDSS in a fun day that included fellowshipping with members of the Down Syndrome Association of the Mid South (Memphis). Elizabeth appeared in the 2010 NEMDSS pictorial calendar as the covergirl for October.
We are thankful that the Lord has BLESSED us by giving us such a sweet little girl to enrich our lives.
